Pre Marriage Counseling
What is Pre Marriage Counseling?
Pre marriage counseling is a good option that couples can take especially to a free country where divorce is allowed. It gives couples a chance to control and possibly avoid risks of marriage before anything actually happens. It can be associated as the big test couples undergo before exchanging vows in the altar.
Pre Marriage counseling mainly targets two factors. One is to serve as aid for couples who are still developing skills for a successful marriage and second is to resolve any current or foreseen problems that may affect the marriage in the long run.
Who needs it?
Though Pre marriage counseling may seem effective, not everyone needs it. For a healthy couple pre marriage can be casual and available as an option only. However for those couples below the age of 18 may need pre marriage counseling. Actually most couples under among the age 18 to 25 are required or encouraged to go through counseling. This goes the same for couples who had issues with making commitments. Other scenarios like a couple with existing critical issue or those partners who had failed marriages before are encouraged to have counseling.
The one who facilitates the process is a skilled family therapist and sometimes a clergy. They may cover certain aspects of marriage starting from the couple’s interests, role expectations, adjustment concerns and communication. It also helps to cover views of philosophy and religion, marriage expectation and financial security roles. These areas are known to be common source of conflict. Another main factor to be included in the counseling is the simulation and further questions regarding parenting and perhaps sexuality.
As you can see, this process helps couples to rediscover and educate the essence of what they are about to take. In its simplest form, pre marriage counseling is just a thorough check. Remember that marriage is a source of joy, but it is not all about joy and happy times, it also means responsibilities. Everyone is afraid of responsibilities, which is normal. Yet the way people act and respond with the responsibilities shows what he or she is worth of. Pre marriage counseling helps couple understand this and sees how they can handle such responsibilities together and individually.
Overall, marriage is a solemn promise that is made to each other and also to the world. It is best not to spoil such promise by later telling everyone that “it didn’t workout”. If by all means, divorce should be prevented. Pre marital counseling is a good option to keep couples in check. If marriage can be damaged proof, then why not right?
